Planning "I am who I am"
I have chosen the teenage drama genre and have decided to do a short movie about a gay girl. Antoniette Lovette is a gay teenager who is bullied relentlessly due to her sexuality . We witness what she has to face and watch as she stands up to her homophobic bullies and declares she is proud to be gay in a very creative way.
This here is a gnat chart with all the tasks I need to do to ensure I complete the planning stage of my movie. It has information on what each task is, as well as when I am to Start and Finish each.
Here is a plan of what each shot will look and sound like.
It includes what dialogue will be used, music that will be played and what non-dietetic sounds will be potentially added. it is also in order of what I would like it to go. I decided to plan out my storyboard like this because i find it more efficient and I find it easier to understand this way.
The footage in this video is blurred and unstable so I decided to do it again. This time I used more diverse camera movement and added music in the background to make the video more interesting.
These videos is my shot lists. I plan to film each scene several times using all of these shot types so that I can put them together so I can have many angles and shot types in one scene. This is to create character profiles, to show importance and facial features, to make fighting scenes more realistic and to get technique into my work.
Potential backing music
I quite like the song 'different' as the whole movie is about being different and wanting to be accepted for that. Also it has a good tempo and beat which contrasts to the school line so the movie is not too heavy or light on the viewers. This means people will not feel uncomfortable while watching the movie but they will still understand the message and the song helps the movie stick in their heads as it is upbeat and catchy.
Due to this being a school project I am actually entitled to use any music I like as it is for educational purposes and can not be copy righted for it. I will ensure that I include the Original artists' name in the credits as a way of payment and respect to them though.
This is the laws on music copyright
Copyright in a sound recording will usually be owned by the record producer and is separate from any copyright in the content of the recording. For example:
-
the composer of the music will be the author of the musical work and will be the first owner of the copyright in that music
-
the lyrics of the song are protected separately by copyright as a literary work and will usually be owned by the person who wrote them
You can usually get permission to use someone else’s intellectual property (IP) by buying the rights from them or getting their permission to use it.
Using someone’s trade mark, patent, copyright or design without their permission is known as ‘IP infringement’ and could lead to a fine, prison or both.
In alliance with PRS for Music, MCPS administers the ‘mechanical’ rights of composers, lyricists and music publishers in relation to the copying of music on to:
-
audio products (eg CDs, records)
-
audio-visual products (eg DVDs)
-
customised music products (eg karaoke discs, backing tracks or music quiz compilations)
-
products that use music as part of their soundtrack (eg films and computer games)
The type of licence you need depends on your operation. Licences are required for businesses that:
-
manufacture or distribute audio products for retail
-
manufacture and distribute audio products to the public with magazines or newspapers for sale in the UK
-
manufacture or distribute audio and audio-visual products for the promotion of a single or album release to the music industry
-
manufacture and distribute customised music products
-
import audio, audio-visual, karaoke, toy and novelty products into the UK
-
use music in productions such as films or TV/radio adverts
-
use music in computer games, novelty or promotional products
-
supply music (eg jukeboxes) to business locations for the purpose of playing to members of the public
-
record music to be played as background music to an exhibition
Licence fees are payable, but these vary depending on the type of licence applied for.
This is my risk assessment according to what I will be filming and what I could think would cause potential problems. It tells you the level of risk each problem represents, how I will go about to solve and/or prevent them and the level of risk the problems may cause after taking such precautions.
Questionnaire of 50 people
This tells me whether anyone knows of any anti-homophobic movies. It helps me to understand whether this genre is popular or not and whether the idea is worth trying.
I have watched both 'How would Jesus treat the gay couple next door?" and "In a heart beat" as research into what elements I could add into my own movie. This questionnaire made it easier for me to see what type of Gay movies are most popular.
This tells me a rough estimation of how popular my movie would be and how large my target audience is.
I added to question to try and see what the audience would expect to gain from the movie, it seems it did not work and I just got a bunch of statements that does not help my work. I should have worded the question differently.
I could not decide what the best name for the movie would be. Therefore I asked my audience and chose the one I found best suiting.
This is a set up question for the next to be answered in order to proceed with my understanding of what people like about a teen drama.
This part of the questionnaire was supposed to help me understand what people who watch teen dramas are looking for in my movie. It did not really give me what I wanted, probably because the question was very vague and did not highlight what I wanted to know. Next time I will word it differently.
This was to give me a better idea of what my target audience is and who I need to please while making the movie. I found more females are likely to watch teen drama than males are and therefore I will target them as potential viewers.
Again, this was to understand who my main target audience would be, I found that younger teens below fifteen are more likely to watch a teen drama. Therefore I will ensure it is vaguely a PG movie , so that it is age appropriate.
I have limited access to actors and actresses so i wanted to know which characters were people's favourites. This is to ensure I included them into the cast instead of using characters no-one may like. This is so the movie will appeal more to my target audience.
Movie Ideas
All of these movies include light intimacy between two characters as well as slowly introducing the story line. I will use this for my movie to ensure it follows the conventions of a gay love movie;.
This is the general idea for the movie. It includes potential props, types of scenes, what genre it will be, the sounds being used shot types that the genre typically uses, character names and the locations the film will take place in.
This is my ideas for how I would like the movie to turn out. I understand things may not go perfectly to plan, but this is my image of the movie.
Due to the unreliability of my actors and actresses, I am having to create a different movie using only one actress and myself. This movie will have the same message about accepting the LGBTQ+ community, but instead of it being a teen drama, it is going to be a spoken word movie that only focuses on one character. I have written a new script for this and it is the following work below.
I have changed my original idea of a whole cast in a teen drama movie into a two actress, spoken word movie. I actually quite like to idea and prefer it over my original one as it sends a more powerful message.
I had to create a new, simpler script as I lost all of my actor and actresses except one.
I have decided to start with a disequilibrium of rejection and loneliness that ascends into an equilibrium of peace and happiness.
I decided to end it this way because I think leaving on a positive, but reflective way, leaves the message that things can change in a more powerful stance.
I have changed the name of my movie into 'I may be gay but I am still human' as I was unable to get enough footage to complete the entire movie and the name 'I am who I am' no longer fits the context.
